Welcome to the home page of Be Aware Be Clear. As a person who has had Cerebral Palsy since birth I have had a life time ambition of creating greater awareness of disability. I often find that when I meet people for the first time there is often a invisible barrier, made up of incorrect assumptions for example, I could not hold down a job. I have been employed by West Herts NHS Hospitals Trust (WHHT) for 15 years. Throughout my time at WHHT they recognised that I have a very strong passion for disability awareness and that one of my skills is raising disability awareness through giving talks – I visited various different departments giving talks. With this proven track record the Trust therefore recruited me as their Disability Champion (a position which I have held since November 2018.) I am based in the HR department but my role extends to supporting patients as well as staff.
I set up Be Aware Be Clear back in 2001 the name, originates from a poem which I wrote
Disability isn't nice,
But you can still have a life.
If people were more aware,
Disability would become more Clear
My Disability Champion role is three days a week, meaning that I have a little more time to work on Be Aware Be Clear. The three strands which I am concentrating on (although not limiting myself to – please see the page titled ‘Evening Talks’ ) are:
- Providing disability awareness to Schools and Colleges
- Providing disability awareness to Companies
- Providing disability awareness through the writing of a blog (aimed at everyone, being humorous but also informative.)
This website will include more information on these strands and will showcase previous talks – through including references
After going through struggles with my jaw, I wrote my experiences down with the hope that it would help other people with speech impediments. Please click here to read my story
